To close port 445 (Microsoft Directory Services):

Windows 2000
Windows XP

6. Click on Disable 7. Reboot per prompt
Windows 2000 - follow these steps:

  1. Click on "Start" → "Settings" → "Control Panel" → Administrative Tools → Computer Management
  2. Click on Device Manager
  3. From the menu select View → Show Hidden Devices
  4. Click on Non-Plug and Play Drivers
  5. Double-click on NetBIOS over TCPIP
  6. Click on the Driver tab
  7. Select Disabled as the Type
  8. Reboot
    WARNING: This will also disable DHCP.


Windows XP - follow these steps:

  1. Click on "Start" → "Control Panel" → Performance & Maintenance → Administrative Tools → Computer Management
  2. Click on Device Manager
  3. From the menu select View → Show Hidden Devices
  4. Click on Non-Plug and Play Drivers
  5. Double-click on NetBIOS over TCPIP
  6. Click on the Driver tab
  7. Select Disabled as the Type
  8. Reboot
    WARNING: This will also disable DHCP.
